The Consolidated Block Association (CBA)

Incorporated and pioneered by the late Ann Thomas of Harlem, NY in 1978, Consolidated Block Association, Inc. (CBA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Jihad N. Qasim, President, continues Ms. Thomas’ ideas and maintains the organization’s mission to encourage Harlemites to become more proficient in civic and human rights through shared communications. CBA works toward this mission by sponsoring block association training, wholesome community events and programs that encompass social, recreational and educational activities.

Currently CBA maintains a number of committees which members are highly encouraged to join and support.

  • S.Y.C.E (Psych): “Seniors & Youth for Cultural Exchange” – Membership of all ages its mission is to develop, exchange and promote cultural ideas, programs and activities for the fortitude of self, family, and community empowerment.
  • BALLROOM BLAST: (Formally, “The Committee to Preserve Ballroom Dancing”) – Develops programs and promotes activities in honor of the historic legacy of the urban ballroom (The Renaissance Ballroom, The Cotton Club and the world renowned SAVOY, to name a few). Ballroom Blast does this by inviting everyone of all ages to the Cha-Cha, Swing, Lindy-Hop, Mambo and other dance styles of urban culture.
  • M.E.C.C.A: “Movement to Educate Citizens on Civic Affairs” – MECCA is an initiative to teach individuals how to organize and run block and neighborhood associations. While also collaborating on basic tenant rights and how to manage a Co-op staff.  MECCA will also teach individuals on the workings of the United States government and its structure.   Some helpful documents included in the MECCA initiative are: The United States Constitution, The Guide – How To Organize A Block/Neighborhood Association, The Guide – How To Handle Problems with a Co-Op’s Board of Directors.
  • P.E.A.C.E: “The People’s Alliance for Civil/Human Rights Education”

**In December 2012, ZAR Entertainment LLC adopted the long standing community organization “The Consolidated Block Association, Inc.”  as a sister organization and continues to provide structural development to the organization.
